Mary Ellen Mark

The artist I chose to emulate is Mary Ellen Mark. She has a large range of work, though she focuses mainly on portraiture. Initially, the pictures I was studying were people in relation to their environments (the beach, New York City, mental institutions, etc..). I later found that her work extends to encompass extensive photos of celebrities. In all of her portraits, she is carefully revealing something about her subject. At times, it is related to their environment, though in other instances she focuses only on the people, without an integral background. Many of her pictures use the environment as way to clarify the person she is capturing. For this reason, her compositions are often unique, as to include signs or images behind the subject. Mary Ellen Mark studied at University of Pennsylvania for both Undergrad and Grad school. She has won many awards, grants and honorary degrees.
